On May 6th, the women of the Curry family dynasty were welcomed on Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table Talk. The women included: Sonya Curry, wife of Dell Curry; Ayesha Curry, wife of Stephen Curry; Sydel Curry, wife of Damien Lee; and Seth Curry’s fiance Callie Rivers, who is the daughter of NBA player Doc Rivers. This is a group of women who were either born into the family of a NBA star or became married to one. The main focus of the table talk was unpacking everything that goes into their marriages, difficulties and the importance of having a sense of self.
Social media has never taken kindly to Ayesha Curry, I will be the first to admit that neither have I. I was prompted to watch after seeing her statements shred to pieces on Twitter. Ayesha has been labeled a ‘woman-hater’ and ‘Pick Me’ for her previous controversial statements about how women dress and the overall arching of what a women should be like.
I believe this belief was maintained by the media and they just found the perfect face for it. Ayesha Curry has only been with Stephen Curry, he is her first love and husband. We were able to listen to her describe the anxiety that has been brought upon her spirit due in part to the life her husband lives, she even revealed that she takes medication because of this anxiety. Ayesha notes that she is fully aware that women are waiting for a slip-up, a moment to swoop in and be with her husband. Which is true, as Jada notes, there is a culture of women who secure their lifestyles by being with wealthy (most of the time married) men. These women don’t care for the marriages or families that these men have; they want the resources and power these men can provide them with. This is not to bash these types of women, who doesn’t want to find someone that can meet all of your needs? Ayesha’ worry is not unwarranted, all one has to do is take a look at the “baddies” who frequent places they know ballers will be in attendance.
Ayesha is also under fire for simply wanting reassurance that she is a wanted woman. I imagine almost daily she is bombarded by the reminders of who wants a taste of what she has, but clearly she is not seeing the other side. She mentions she likes an even playing field, and that would include her own set of suitors. Not that she wants an outside relationship but just a comfort net of being adored and desired like her husband. I don’t view this as insecurity, it’s natural in the age that we live in to go on social media and get a boost from seeing ‘likes’ and interactions. It’s the same thing.
The other women in the Curry family experience a similar feeling, maybe on a different level. Momma Sonya Curry mentions she has been more aggressive in the past toward women trying to get in with her man but maintains the belief that her husband should be the one doing the real pushing. Sydel Curry is more insecure with the time schedule her husband is on due to his career; she doesn’t want to make a lifestyle of following him around the country but mentions she seen him for just 6 hours in the past few weeks. Callie Rivers is newly engaged, like within the past 72 hours, but her shared story featured the racism growing up in a bi-racial household that held prominence in media.
I will make clear, I do not support these women solely identifying as black. They are all bi-racial. Sonya Curry detailed the blatant racism she experienced as a child growing up in an area that strongly believed in the one-drop rule. But we don’t believe that over here. However, I strongly emphasize with her experience as no child should have had to witness that.
I felt compelled to watch this Red Table Talk for myself. Listening to Twitter will only give you pieces of the true picture, and that piece will only compliment the message in which supports that users’ belief. My takeaway is that Ayesha Curry is a regular woman who would like to protect her family from any perceived threats. After all, isn’t that what normal people try to achieve by deleting all social accounts in a relationship and/or starting arguments about liking pictures?
